Health and Nutrition
Empowering Health Centers: Enhancing Maternal and Newborn Care in Uganda
We support health centres to improve maternal and new born health, by providing equipment, monitoring their viral load, trainings in nutrition and best feeding methods. We run feeding programmes for malnourished children and mothers, promote breastfeeding, and provide sexual and reproductive health information to adolescents.
Promoting Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)
Adolescents in Uganda do not have adequate access to sexual and reproductive health services or information. At least one in four women in Uganda get pregnant as a teenager, contraceptive use is limited, and teenage pregnancy is a key factor in girls dropping out of school. We work with schools, clinics, youth peer groups, village health teams and other platforms to increase adolescent knowledge of sexual and reproductive health. We support youth champions to spread messages and act as change agents in their communities.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
Uganda, through NWSC has a vision of achieving access to safe water above 79% in rural and 95% in urban population. Safe drinking-Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are crucial to human health and well-being, and access to safe WASH is a Global Goals Agenda.
The UN-SDG-6 envisions sustainable and equitable access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as the elimination of open defecation by 2030. The consequences of unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene on life can be deadly; and according to UNICEF, over 700 children under the age of 5 die every day of diarrheal diseases. Safely managed WASH is not only a prerequisite to human health, but contributes to livelihoods, school attendance and dignity and, helps to create resilient communities living in healthy environment.
